Change your QR code without reprinting it.
Plain QR makes editable QR codes for menus, signs and flyers at a fraction of the usual price. Paste a link or upload a menu, download the code, and update where it goes whenever you like.
- From $2 a month. The price is on the page and it does not change after a trial.
- Nothing technical to set up: create a code, download it, print it
- Every code also comes as a free static version that never depends on us, for print that must never change
A printed menu is permanent. The link behind its QR code is not.
An editable (dynamic) QR code does not contain your link. It contains a short link on the generator's website, which sends people on to your menu. That is what lets you change the destination later, and it is also why the code stops working when the generator stops redirecting it.
The best-known generator has thousands of one-star reviews, mostly from people whose printed codes stopped working when a trial ended, and its own help pages say trial codes are deactivated. Owners ask each other online what to do when a laminated menu stops working. The usual answer is to reprint everything.
Plain QR is built around two things: a low, flat price shown up front, and honesty about what happens to a code if you stop paying. You can read both before you sign up, and every code also comes as a free static version, so you are never forced to depend on us.

With Plain QR

How it works
- 1
Request service
Tell us roughly how many codes you need. We set up your account within 2 business days and email you a sign-in link.
- 2
Make your codes
Paste a link, upload a PDF menu, or build a simple mobile menu page. Pick colours, add a logo, and download a print-ready file.
- 3
Test and print
A built-in check warns you if a code is too small or too low-contrast to scan. Test it with two phones, then send it to your printer.
- 4
Change it any time
Update the destination or the menu whenever prices, hours or links change. The printed code stays exactly the same.
Features
Edit without reprinting
Change where a code goes in two clicks. Swap a lunch menu for a dinner menu, point a sign at this week's offer, or fix a typo in the link.
Hosted menu pages
Upload a PDF or build a simple mobile menu with sections, prices and allergen notes. Update it any time; the code does not change. No app, no cookies.
Free static codes
Every code can be downloaded as a static version that contains your link directly. It works without us, but it cannot be edited. Use it for anything printed in volume that will never change.
Print-ready files
Download SVG, EPS, PDF or high-resolution PNG with your colours, a logo in the centre and a correct quiet zone. A size and contrast checker warns before you print something that will not scan.
Scan counts
See scans by day and code, with city and device type. No cookies, no tracking of individuals, no personal data stored. Export as CSV.
Bulk creation
Upload a spreadsheet of destinations and get a zip of numbered codes for tables, rooms, labels or badges.
Schedule destinations
Send a code to a different page by time of day, weekday or date range, with a default fallback. Breakfast, lunch and dinner on the same table tent.
Renewal reminders
We email you 14, 7 and 1 day before a plan ends, so a missed payment never turns into a surprise dead code.
A look inside
What you see day to day: the working view and the monthly summary.
Who it's for
Restaurants, cafés and bars
You print menus, table tents and stickers. Update prices and specials at 4 pm without touching the print.
Shops, salons and clinics
Counter cards and window signs that point at bookings, reviews, a price list or this month's offer.
Print shops and designers
Clients ask for 'a QR code'. Give them one they can edit, at a price that does not eat your margin.
Events and venues
Badges, programmes and wayfinding signs printed once, with destinations that change through the day on a schedule you set in advance.

Compared with the alternatives
- QR Code Generator (Bitly) and similar subscription generators
- Polished tools with tiered subscriptions, typically priced several times higher. The widely reported problem is what happens when a trial ends or you stop paying: codes are deactivated and print has to be replaced.
- Free static QR generators
- Fine when the destination will never change. A static code contains the link itself, so it cannot be switched off, but it also cannot be edited, has no scan counts, and gets dense for long links. Plain QR gives you these too, free, alongside the editable version.
- A link shortener
- Short links can be put in any QR code and edited on paid plans. The link still lives on the shortener's domain and under its terms, so you have the same dependency with an extra step.
Your first week
Request, create, test, print. Most customers have a printed, tested code within the week.
- Day 1: Request service; your account is ready within 2 business days.
- Day 2: Create your first codes, upload a menu or paste your links, and test with two different phones.
- Day 3: Download the print files and the free static versions, and send them to your printer.
- Day 7: Check your first scan counts and set the renewal reminders to the right email address.
Security and data
- Codes, menu pages and scan counts are stored on cloud servers, encrypted at rest and in transit, with daily backups kept for 30 days.
- Every redirect and menu page is served over HTTPS with certificates managed for you.
- We store no personal data about people who scan: no cookies, no retained IP addresses, only aggregate counts.
- Your account data is exported or deleted on request within 30 days.
Questions
What happens to my codes if I stop paying?
Your plan stays active until the end of the period you paid for. After that we keep your codes working for a further 30 days and email you before it ends. If you have not renewed by then, scanning a code shows a short page saying it is paused, with the business name, so customers are not left at an error. We do not promise to keep editable codes running indefinitely; that is part of how we keep the price at $2.
How do I make sure a printed code never stops working?
Use the free static version. It contains your link directly, so it works whether or not you pay us or we exist. The trade-off is that you cannot change where it goes. For menus that change often, use the editable code and keep the plan active; for a fixed flyer or a sticker on a product, a static code is the safer choice.
Why is it so much cheaper than the others?
Plain QR does one job: editable codes and simple menu pages. There is no sales team, no add-ons and no enterprise tier, and codes are served from a small, efficient system. We would rather have many small customers on a low flat price than a few on a high one.
Do I need any technical knowledge?
No. You paste a link or upload a menu, download the code, and print it. There is nothing to install and no domain or DNS setup.
Will the price go up after a trial?
There is no trial that changes the price. The price you see is the price you pay, and founding-customer prices are locked while your plan stays active. If prices ever change for new customers, existing ones are not affected.
What if Plain QR shuts down?
We would give at least six months' notice by email, and you could export all your destinations and download static versions of every code at any time before that. Static codes would keep working regardless.
Are scan counts GDPR-friendly?
Yes. We count scans by day, city and device type without cookies and without storing IP addresses or personal data about the people who scan.
